The neon bulbs do not cause this circuit to blow up. They merely
hasten this explosive outpouring of electrical energy due to their
contribution of negative impedance which this circuit is already
generating. I don't adhere to the term of "negative impedance"
since impedances and resistance always remain positive values.
Instead, the inversion mathematically occurs with the resultant
voltage becoming an imaginary inversion of voltage leading to an
inversion of the input of subsequent instants. This leads to
negative watts when imaginary amplitudes of both the input and
the output voltages dominates the real amplitudes.
